Affirmations: what they are and how they can reframe your mind.
Affirmations are a powerful tool that you can use to change your mindset. They are typically phrases, said out loud, sometimes looking in a mirror, to yourself. They act almost like a little pep talk. Everyone from athletes to moms to students can use affirmations and may notice a positive change in how they perceive the world around them.
There are a few different types of affirmations. Some examples of affirmations include:
I am strong.
I am capable.
I attract success and opportunities.
I am smart.
Opportunity flows freely to me.
I am important.
I am kind.
Affirmations can also look like this:
My life is not a race or competition.
Slowing down is not a bad thing.
There is growth in stillness.
Affirmations can be used at almost any moment in time. We enjoy starting our day with three favorites. You can incorporate affirmations into your daily life through habit stacking, which means adding them after something else you do each day. For example, you can start speaking affirmations after brushing your teeth. Or in a moment where you may need them, like struggling to complete a task or handling a difficult situation at work.
While they may feel silly at first, affirmations can create real positive effects. Repeated practice of affirmations can even begin to rewire how you view yourself anf the world, including acting as a buffer for external world stressors. According to the American Psychological Association, researchers found that affirmations have long-lasting positive effects on general well-being and self-worth. Affirmations were also found to reduce anxiety and negative moods.*Try out affirmations for yourself and see if you notice a difference in your moods and well-being!
